How to Swipe Mindfully and Find Your Perfect Match

This entry is part 1 of 2 in the series Mindful Dating Course: Stop Swiping, Start Connecting

In this lesson, we will learn about the basics of mindful dating and how mindful practices can save your relationship.

What Is Mindful Dating?

Mindfulness is becoming a hot trend in life. When it comes to dating, it’s all about living in the moment, making decisions that go hand-in-hand with what you truly believe, and embracing self-love and kindness toward others.
In simple words, mindful dating is about being your true self, all the time. It’s about handling feelings of nervousness, self-doubt, or excitement with grace. It’s about getting to know yourself, setting boundaries that are good for you, and preparing for the possibility of hearing ‘no’. And importantly, it’s about saying what you feel and need, honestly and kindly.

Online Dating Is a Problem? Mindfulness to the Rescue!

Dating apps have changed the dating game. They’ve made it easier to meet people but also added new challenges. Mindfulness can be your superpower to overcome these hurdles for a more satisfying love life.
Judging a book by its cover: Mindfulness reminds us to take time to really get to know someone, and enjoy their unique spark instead of focusing on superficial traits of a person or simply the looks.
The ‘always looking for better’ syndrome: Mindfulness helps us to focus on the person we’re with right now, rather than always wondering if there’s someone better out there. This way, you have way more chances to find the right person for you and build a strong relationship.
The ‘shopping for love’ mindset: Dating apps can make us feel like we’re shopping for love. We scroll and swipe… and get used to it. Mindfulness teaches us to see and treat people as people, not products.
The ghosting problem: Mindfulness encourages us to communicate openly and understand each other, which leads to healthier, more respectful interactions.
Dating anxiety: Swiping and waiting for matches can make us anxious. Mindfulness helps us handle feelings of rejection and low self-esteem.
Being disconnected from the ‘now’: Always checking dating apps and chatting can make us forget the present moment. Mindfulness brings us back and gives us energy.

Time to Dive into Mindful Dating

Building a great relationship isn’t just about dating and talking. It’s about knowing what you want, standing up for your values, and shooting for your relationship goals. It’s about shedding any judgments and just being you. Ready to start? Here’s how!

Get to Know You
Explore what you need and want from a relationship, and how you usually behave in relationships. This is like laying the groundwork for a healthy, fulfilling love life. If you know yourself, you can set the right expectations for your partner and relationship. Don’t worry, we’ll dive into this in Course 2: Unlocking Love: A Journey of Self-Discovery for Relationship Success. You will learn to deal with your needs, values, non-negotiables, strengths, weaknesses, boundaries, attachment types, patterns, and way more.

Get to Know Your Date
If you’re looking for a long-term partner, you need to know what you’re looking for. Instead of staying on the surface, you need to try to understand your date’s values and qualities. Together, we will learn to plan your first dates so as to make them meaningful and go beyond small talk to reach really intimate conversations and actions. Starting off with a sincere and deep connection will make all your dates better and your connections more significant. Be honest, and you’ll find someone who is a great match for you. We’ll explore this in detail in Course 3 “The Perfect Fit: Understanding Your Potential Partner for Lasting Love”.

Master the Art of Dating and Communicating
Effective communication is fundamental to successful dating and building strong relationships. Good communication allows you to clearly express your thoughts, feelings, needs, and expectations for your date. This prevents misunderstandings and helps both partners comprehend each other better.
As a good communicator, you’re likely to be a good listener too. This means you can better understand your date’s perspectives, feelings, and needs. Understanding each other promotes empathy and deepens your connection. You’ll find that being a good listener makes you more attractive. It also gives you lots of info about your date.
Good communication skills help you express your viewpoint respectfully, understand your partner’s point of view, and work together towards a resolution of a conflict.
Enhancing your communication skills can be a significant step towards successful dating. By fostering better understanding and deeper connections, good communication can set the stage for a successful, healthy, and satisfying relationship. We’ll guide you through this in Course 4 “Enhancing Interpersonal Skills for Deep Connections” and Course 5 “Psychology in Love: Master the Science of Successful Relationships”.

Learn to Communicate Important Things
Mindful dating is about reflecting on how the date went. Don’t just think about how you felt, or whether there was a spark or chemistry. Think about whether you were able to express your important values, needs, boundaries, and relationship goals, and how your date reacted. Did you pay attention and listen carefully? Did you feel a connection? Answers to these questions can help you find the right partner and build a healthy relationship. We’ll dive into this in Course 4 “Enhancing Interpersonal Skills for Deep Connections”
