In the wedding preparation, every little thing is important: from festive dishes to invitations. We’ll talk about them today.
A wedding card is a trifle that every guest will see. Well, it’s time to check if everything is alright with your invitations. We offer you a checklist “What to look for when writing invitations in English?”.
1. Instead of RSVP, write “With Love”
This abbreviation is used in the West as a question of whether the invitee will come. In India, it is not common; therefore, it is better not to use it. Instead of RSVP, write “With Love” or “Best Regards”.
2. Show respect to your parents
Address by name to each guest. Add guest names to the phrase “We invite …”. Writing the full names of your family members as part of your wedding card in English is a gesture of respect that they deserve.
3. No cliches and quotes
Stop copying phrases such as “Two hearts, two lives … One dream forever”. Tell us better where you invite them and what is special about your wedding. For example, “Lots of dancing, awesome music, food and drink!”
4. Do not be too formal
Do not use phrases such as “friendly presence” or “great honor”. You do not invite guests to the inauguration. Also, you do not want your guests to think that you copied material from an English textbook.
It’s better to replace it with something more personal and less fanciful. For example, “We would like you to come and celebrate with our friends and family.”
5. Clear content
Do not try to list all members of your family in one invitation. Mentioning parents and grandparents will be enough. It will also make your wedding card neat and add elegance.
6. Individual approach to invitations
For example, instead of quotes from the Internet, write a phrase that applies only to you and your spouse. You can write something about how you met or why you value each other.
7. Appearance
Make sure the color and font of the invitation are correct. Make sure you match the text color to the general wedding theme (black ink is generally avoided in Hindu traditions). Besides, the font should not be too long or fancy, so it will be too difficult for the guest to decode the text of your wedding card in English. Do not forget to check your invitation for grammatical mistakes.
8. Indicate the place, date, and time
It is very important to indicate the correct address, time, and date. You can even add a QR code for the location of the venue. Since almost everyone uses Google Maps these days, a QR code at the venue would be a suitable addition.
9. Add a no-gifts please clause
If you do not want to receive a bunch of unnecessary wedding gifts, write about it in the invitation. This will save guests’ time that they don’t have to spend looking for gifts. You can also ask them about specific things.
Your wedding card reflects the whole wedding. So go through all the points on our checklist and make the necessary corrections to your invitation.
